vintage-american-flag-shorts-tutorial
hi y’all! this past week, i fashioned some “vintage” american flag shorts for the upcoming NASCAR race this weekend, and was so proud of myself last night when they turned out exactly like i wanted! i wish i had taken pictures at every step, but i'll try my best to give you an accurate description:

1  |  gather your inspiration, this will help guide you when painting, how short you want to cut your shorts, and what to do on the back pockets (if anything).

vintage american flag shorts inspirationall images above were from pinterest, just search for “american flag shorts”

2  |  find an old pair of jeans, preferably a lighter wash so they’ll really have a vintage feel, and the paint shows up well. we recently made a trip to goodwill, so all of my old jeans had been donated. i ran by buffalo exchange in plaza midwood and snagged a pair of $7 hollister jeans. (which was ALL i spent on this project because i had the paint on hand already!) these were brand new jeans – tags still on ‘em! the jeans had no marks or distressing on them at all, but i'm sure, if your jeans were already worn out, you could just paint and wash and scratch the distressing steps below, if you want!

3  |  don’t get your scissors out yet, just get to painting! i sketched my lines with a pencil and ruler. i also printed a star on some cardstock, cut it out, and used it as a template. just trace the star with a pen and fill it in with white paint! i didn’t use fabric paint. in all honesty, i probably won’t wear these shorts after this weekend, but i'm sure the color would wash out more if you wash it with detergent more than once. i used craft acrylic paint that i use on everything - it’s what i had on hand, and i wasn’t going to spend much money on this in case it was a failure. I would suggest using an angled brush for your stars so it can be a fairly sharp line. i painted all my white first, starting with the stripes. by the time i was through with the stars, the stripes had dried and i could move on to red, then lastly, blue. you’ll want to be sure to paint farther down than you intend to cut – so you’re pattern will go all the way to the bottom of the shorts.

4  |  let the paint dry for about 5 hours, so it has time to really set in, then throw them in the washing machine -- by itself! i did a short cycle, low cold water, no detergent. then let them air dry. remember, they’re still long jeans at this point, i haven’t cut them off into shorts! once they’re dry, NOW you can cut them! i compared the length to my favorite pair of shorts to ensure that they’re an appropriate length. even though these are intended to be redneck/rockabilly, i didn’t want bootie shorts.

5  |  using sharp scissors, get to cutting. i used my kitchen shears because they’re the sharpest i had! i used these links as a guide for distressing: 1 and 2 – 2 has a good tutorial for ombré denim if you’re interested. once you’re through cutting/distressing/destroying, throw the shorts in the wash. again, we’re doing short cycle, low cold water, no detergent. once it’s through, dry them in the dryer.
chances are, you’ll have random threads hanging all off the bottom of the shorts, trim ‘em up a bit, if you like, and you’re DONE! enjoy!

p.s. if too much of the paint washes out, simply reapply, let it dry and wash again if necessary (this was my rationale when taking a chance and washing them twice!)

where would you wear your american flag shorts?
like it?

for some reason i feel the strong urge to break out in song:

it’s RACE weekend! more importantly, it’s memorial day weekend and we have friends and family coming in to town for the coca-cola 600 nascar race held right here in charlotte. [concord, to be exact] i went to my first nascar race last fall with the men in my life [husband, bro, dad], and in all honesty, had a blast! 1. i love to people watch, and really doesn’t get much better than at a nascar race!  2. i was raised in arkansas and southern virginia, so it’s fun to be able to channel [and embrace] my inner redneck. since i've been slacking this week on the posts, not only do you get a fun song, you get an outfit as well! here’s my attire for sunday at the track:
redneck-racin-weekend
1  |  i thought i'd keep it simple in a white v-neck since i'm going all out on the shorts. my favorite is this one from old navy. it’s got a soft slub knit that’s comfortable for all day wear, but not too sheer!

2  |  i spent the better half of last weekend diy’ing my shorts! after scooping some $7 jeans from a local consignment/thrift store, i put a paintbrush in my hand and got patriotic. i used this tutorial and some [pin]spiration to help me through it! mine actually turned out pretty well! click here to preview a snippet. might post a better image later!

3  |  i might be the only southern sorority girl who, before a month ago, didn’t own a pair of cowboy boots. but since i don’t wear them too frequently i decided to score some on ebay, which i did – for $30. if you look, you will find them too. i seriously love ebay.

4  |  i won’t be sporting these ray-bans, but i will be wearing my cheap aviators i bought at the beach one year. probably cost me about $11 from alvin’s island, if i had to guess. regardless, there’s no way i would take my nice glasses out there - not with my track record [pun intended. hah!].

5  |  lastly, no redneck woman is complete without her cheap light beer. preferably consumed with some barbecue and baked beans, thank you.

hope everyone has a safe, and happy memorial day! “SHAKE AND BAKE”…sorry.

what are your plans for the holiday weekend?

happy friday, everyone! here’s a few things i'm excited about today:

1  |  i painted my nails last night using a picture from kate as inspiriation. a fun twist on the french mani! coincidentally, she posted a tutorial for it today! see how you can get your gold dipped nails!

2  |  my brother’s girlfriend, rachael, is coming to play this weekend! she’s got great taste in fashion, and i'm sure there will be some shopping in order!

3  |  these pretty bracelets and this tutorial to make them!…and that blog title.

i hope everyone had a great weekend and got to spend some good qt with their moms! my parents were out of town this weekend, which means we spent the whole weekend with andrew’s fam – which is always awesome. i always think of how fortunate i've been to marry into a family that i love so so so much and that i think of as my own. it really doesn’t come around too often.

we had a little bit of drama with the house hunt this weekend. we put in an offer on friday and have had some mixed signals and lots of back and forth since. so, naturally, i'm a nervous wreck. my mind needs to go somewhere else right now…

next wednesday, dave matthews band is coming to charlotte…and we have tickets! i'm really excited! this was a spontaneous purchase after a few drinks with my brother a couple of weeks ago, but one that i'm sure we won’t regret. i saw dave live in 2007 when he played a free concert for virginia tech in lane stadium. i wasn’t even a fan, then, and thought they were awesome. how someone can keep their energy up for that long, i'll never know.

i'm sure, as most artists do, he’ll have a new cd or new songs they’re promoting, but i sure hope they play some old favorites: ants marching (duh) and grey street (duh duh). really, i'm looking forward to having a blanket on the grass, a beer in my hand, and listening to great music [on a weeknight]!!

you can bet that dmb will be the boss of spotify until then!

so, if you need to go somewhere today…

where is this tuesday taking you?

hi y’all! it must be nice to be “friday” – everyone’s so happy when you come around and they look forward to seeing you all week! the week has flown by – i guess being busy will do that to you! i've been wanting to fill y’all in on some great beauty buys that i love. without further ado, here’s my friday five.
friday-five-beauty-bargains

1  |  it’s no secret, i was cursed with bad, oily, acne prone skin. i have a hard time finding a moisturizer that doesn’t make my forehead look like a shiny….something and irritate my skin. behold the alba even advance daily cream. i accidentally grabbed a pic of the night cream. fyi, it looks really similar. this stuff smells really good and is silky smooth.

2  |  false eyelashes have always been a favorite of my girlfriends and myself. my favorites are the ardell 110 black. anytime a special occasion arrives, or maybe even a fun night out, it’s time for some falsies. i've only recently gotten decent at putting them on without poking my eye out – quite the accomplishment, eh?

3  |  the opi rapidry topcoat. i've sung its praises before – y’all this stuff is amazing. $11 might be a little steep, but use an ulta coupon and go get it today. not only will it leave you without sheet marks (i always get the urge to paint my nails before bed), it will make your mani last daayyys longer than anything before.

4  |  my nightly skincare routine is not complete without the almay moisturizing eye makeup remover pads. simply washing my face will not do – i'll always have specs of mascara in my eyeball, or raccooned around my eyes. these little pads get all the gunk right off. it does leave a little bit of oily "moisturizing” residue that i usually just wipe off with tp. cheap and good!

5  |  a few months ago i won a giveaway from glamour magazine and scored 6 zoya nail polishes and to my surprise, it came with zoya’s awesome polish remover, remove+. before i used this, i really didn’t think there was a difference in polish removers. it’s a 3 in 1 solution that removes, conditions, and even cleans the nail before applying your next polish selection. and it actually smells good! it even comes in the handy pump that you see in the salon, which really makes me feel like a pro!

i'm linking up with alex and lauren today for their own “friday five” and “high five for friday”.

p.s. everyone go over to alex’s blog and give her a hard time – she left for the bahamas today, and i'm so jealous – as i'm sure you are now, too!

happy weekend!

hi y’all. it’s wednesday and i'm linking up with jamie for what i'm loving wednesday! short post today: per usual, my stomach is rumbling, so i've gotta run and get some lunch.

what-im-loving-wednesday

1 | i'm loving carrie underwood’s new cd, blown away. i'll admit, it took me a little while to love it, though. i kept listening to “good girl” over and over and swearing it was the best song on the album, which it very well may be, but i've grown to love “do you think about me” and “blown away” so much as well. it’s worth noting that i did buy the cd from best buy last weekend, and it’s the first cd i've bought from a store (not itunes) since her last release in 2009.

2 | last night we had a big thunderstorm, and it was so nice to just cut off the sound machine and listen to it all night. i slept like a baby. am i the only one who looks forward to a good rain? …i sound like a farmer…

3 | how cute is this state print? i would love to get one for every state we’ve lived in (arkansas, virginia, north carolina), and hang them all in the kitchen.

4 | lastly, i'm loving my new blue jeans. i scored big time at the banana republic outlet this weekend and walked away with some cobalt skinnies for $15. unreal. i cant wait to wear them with some bold stripes! p.s. this is not me (pic via)

what are you loving this wednesday?

i need a break, how about you?

the weather has been pretty pleasant here lately, not too hot, not too cool. better enjoy it while i can - we all know how HOT these charlotte summers can get. i've been trying my best to be conscious about what i eat - trying to get my bathing suit bod ready for summer. LBH, i haven't had a "bathing suit bod" since college. lots of grilled chicken breast and trying to up my veggie intake are my goals for the next few weeks. if i can get into a routine and stop craving the bad stuff, i think i'll be in the clear to lose a few lbs.

so, i got a late start today, as you can see i'm posting this at noon. my stomach is growling, and i've got food on the brain. needless to say, my mind is taking me to a restaurant.

Take Me There Tuesday Blog Button

today, i'll be grabbing a quick lunch at the common market - over in southend. i'm cheating at my TMTT rules by posting about a place i've been, but hey, it is where i wanna go today! you can view their menu online and see that the bulk of their selections are delicious deli sams, but if you're watching your waistline [decrease], they've got some great vegetarian options  - as well as some big awesome salads that sound amazing!

The Common Market

ok, so i don't have any pictures of my food [yet], but use your imagination, and you'll enjoy this trip as much as me!

please tell me…

where is this tuesday taking you?

happy friday, friends! has everyone been gearing up for an event-filled saturday? andrew was naming off all the huge sporting events happening tomorrow, and it’s mind-boggling how many things were planned (or not) on the same day: cinco-de-mayo, the kentucky derby, stanley cup playoffs, mayweather vs cotto, baksetball playoffs, and the wells fargo championship golf tournament here in charlotte! the boys are going to the golf tournament tomorrow and sunday which leaves me with nothing on the agenda (hallelujia!) i love a weekend where i'm allowed to do whatever i want! since my weekend is a blank slate, it’s hard to make it the center of my friday five. so i'm picking the most glamerous event from above to feature instead…

friday-five-derby-days

1  |  i really love the lilly pulitzer felicity dress! the sweetheart neckline would be flattering on anyone, and i love the stripes! paired with some gold jewelry would be great too!

2  |  it’s the kentucky derby so you KNOW your ensemble isn’t complete without a hat. now, i'm sure there are some very very fabulous hats out there, but i'm trying to be realistic here – this is what i would actually wear! a simple navy, monogrammed hat would go great with my dress!

3  |  now, i've never been to the derby, but i would image that you’re walking in the grass quite a bit before… or at least doing a lot of standing. i would go with a low wedge heel – for comfort reasons, obviously, and so my heels wouldn’t sink into the ground. these are so cute, i might just have to invest in them for everyday wear too!

4  |  the weekend’s not complete without the signature drink, the mint julep!

5  |  my wayfarer style would be a little too sporty for this event – bigger is better when it comes to the hats and the sunglasses. these would be perfect and would complement my look perfectly!

i'm linking up with alex and lauren today for their own “friday five” and “high five for friday”.

happy weekend!

well, we’re over the hump! it’s thursday – i used to say thursday was my favorite day of the week because that means tomorrow’s friday! hah! i've cooked “real” dinners twice this week – out of four nights, that’s not too bad of a record – and they’ve both been brand new recipes that i was really pleased with. for your enjoyment:

skinny chicken enchiladas

skinny-enchiladas

in the original recipe, i think she put a lot more sauce and cheese on top, but since i splurged on a little sour cream, i decided to lay low on the cheese. also, be sure to spray your pan with more non-stick then you’d normally use; mine did stick a little. we’re having leftovers tonight, and i'm already looking forward to it!

#2:

chicken tikka masala

sorry, my picture wasn’t as pretty for this one. most recipes say to grill the chicken, but we don’t have a grill, so i baked mine. it was still moist and tasted really awesome! i served mine over brown rice, but i bet it’d be better over white or basmati! ALSO, some reviewers said they used 3 tablespoons of garam masala in the sauce, but since i couldn’t find it in the gstore, i left that out. AND my sauce is doubled, because i like a lot of it! the recipe is linked above, but here are my adjustments:

chicken marinade
1 cup yogurt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger (be sure to mince it really well!)
1 teaspoons salt, or to taste
3 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-size pieces

sauce
1 tablespoon butter
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2  jalapeno pepper, finely chopped
3 teaspoons ground cumin
3 teaspoons paprika
1 (16 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 3/4 cup fat free half and half
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

in a large bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, 2 teaspoons cumin, cinnamon, cayenne, black pepper, ginger, and 1 teaspoon salt. stir in chicken, cover, and refrigerate for 1 hour.

preheat the oven for 350. once the oven has heated, spread the chicken onto a lined baking sheet, and bake for 30 minutes.

melt butter in a large heavy skillet over medium heat. saute garlic and jalapeno for 1 minute. Season with 3 teaspoons cumin and paprika. stir in tomato sauce and cream. simmer on low heat until sauce thickens, about 20 minutes. add grilled chicken, and simmer for 10 minutes. serve over rice and enjoy!!

both of these recipes were very very good, not bad on the budget or the waistline! they take a little bit more time and effort than my go-to breakfast for dinner, but will both be added to the future dinner routine!

tried it? tell me about it!
