happy tuesday! we're almost at the halfway point! i'm still recovering from my long weekend, luckily monday didn't give me too much trouble. i'm already looking forward to this weekend - we've got some friends coming into town, and i can't wait to try out some new spots while they're here!

Take Me There Tuesday Blog Button

i've been hearing a lot of buzz about a new restaurant in the cotswold area, called leroy fox. its home-cooked soul food options like chicken fried chicken and one of my all-time faves, shrimp and grits, definitely look promising. i especially love that a few of their signature drinks have charlotte street names [selwyn ave, sharon road, providence road]. i can definitely see andrew channeling his inner don draper, sippin' on a "king of foxes" - their own version of an old fashioned. leroy fox has live music on the weekends, so i've put it on the agenda friday night. it's been open for a little while now, so hopefully all the long waiting hype has passed.

have you been there? loved it? hated it? tell me about it... or just link up!

where’s this tuesday taking you?

after a fantastic weekend, mondays just creep by. am i right? we spent a boatload of time with both andrew’s and my family this weekend, and it was p.e.r.f.e.c.t. – 2 nights included a deckside fire in the chiminea and every day, awesome food – both of which i love and adore. we have definitely decided that a nice sized patio or deck will be included or added on to our new dream house. mom whipped up and quick and delicious pie saturday night that i'm sharing with you today. we’ve been having this pie for as long as i've been alive, and would never believe how simple it is:

i give you: easy lemonade pie

Easy Lemonade Pie

you’ll need:
1 graham cracker pie crust
1 can lemonade concentrate
1 large sized container cool whip (thawed) or free if you’re trying to be healthy
1 can eagle brand condensed milk (again, you can use lowfat or fat free)

combine the condensed milk with the lemonade concentrate with a spoon or ladle is fine. then, fold in the cool whip. you do not want to mix it in – my guess is that your pie would be runny if you mix it too much. pour your ingredients into your pie crust and pop it in the freezer for 3 or 4 hours. DONE! deelish! eat it up! you’ll want to store your pie in the freezer if you don’t eat it all in the first sitting!

p.s. we had a lot of filling left over so you may can stretch it into 2 crusts? orrrr just enjoy the leftover filling until the real thing is ready!

made it? tell me about it!

i've had a little bit of a rough go this week, so i'm happy to say that andrew and i are heading out of charlotte tonight until sunday. sunday is father's day, so we'll be driving up to virginia to spend some much needed quality time with our dads and families. it's so nice to get back to your roots and a slower pace.

i may be back tomorrow for friday five, i may not. my weekend starts at 5 today, and it couldn't be more welcome!

since we’re on the subject of hair...

i've been really curious lately about salt water sprays for beachy hair. have you tried it? what's your favorite brand? a few reviews that i've seen mention that it gives you hair a dirty, caked-on product feeling. which, i guess when you're at the beach and your hair dries with ocean water, it sorta feels that way as well. i want to know - is it worth it to spend $20 on a fancy spray, or give it a go with the DIY first?

hi y’all! i hope everyone had a great weekend! i used my monday to recover -- had a little too much fun. although, i did make it to the gym saturday AND sunday!! *round of applause* go me! saturday night, we went with my brother and his girlfriend to see lady antebellum! let me tell you - they were a-w-e-s-o-m-e! i knew every song and had a blast dancing to all of them! darius rucker (who i will forever fondly refer to as hootie) opened for lady a and i would definitely pay to see him as a headliner! he even made andrew happy by singing a few hootie and the blowfish songs -- a real crowd pleaser! overall, it was a great weekend, one that i'd love to do over again! buuut we're back on the grind of the day to day routine, and i'm going to take a little break today and pretend it's friday: Take Me There Tuesday Blog Button

ya’ll are going to laugh, but the reason i'm picking friday for my "take me there tuesday" is because i'm getting my hair done on fridayyy! i know i'm not the only person in the world who loves a good cut and color. i always feel SO much better! my goal is the long kardashian-esque locks, so i won't be doing any drastic cutting, just a routine trim along with some summer highlights. even though i've been going to the same stylist for yearrrs [still in danville! hah!] and she already know's what i want, i still like to be prepared with a few pictures.

without fail, i always bring in a pic of jen when i get my hair colored.

happy friday! thanks for taking a sec to stop by! it's friday which means i'm doing a quick round-up of some of my favorite things, and today, it's office supplies! i'll get right to it:

stylish-office

1  |  2  |  3  |  4  |  5

1  |  i love these funny post its from knock knock. we have a very laid-back office, and i know these would get a laugh or seven. buy them online or at paper twist in charlotte!

2  |  i have to have a good pen! i have one on my desk right now that always sits out, kinda like it’s tempting you and saying, “take this pen, and laura will beat you down”. the felt tip le pens have always been a favorite of mine. they come in a large selection of colors [more than what’s pictured above] to keep things bright and non-work-ish.

3  |  are you a coffee drinker? i definitely am! having this cute jonathan adler mug would reduce my trips to dunkin' donuts significantly! AND it's microwave safe!

4  |  my little planner from post by graphic image keeps me in check. it's the perfect size, not bulky at all, to keep in my purse all the time. i even got mine monogrammed with my initials on the front! there's still 6 months left in the year, so grab one from that link above for ONLY $4! [that's nuts!]

5  |  lastly, today i'm enjoying the sweet sweet fragrance of the pink citron candle from voluspa. y'know when you walk in anthro and it smells amazing? it's this candle! i realize how lucky i am that my bosses don't mind me playing with fire in the office.

now that i've gotten you all pumped about awesome office supplies, we'll all have a productive friday, right? eh.

as always, i'm linking up with my favorite, alex and sweet lauren today for their own “friday five” and “high five for friday”.

sore to the core. oh my, i might not make it through the day. after a super-tough weight training class on tuesday, followed by the "i'm not gonna give up just because i'm sore" workout last night, my arms, legs, and entire backside region hate my guts right now.

the main reason (along with it's friends) i haven't stuck with working out in the past is because i have a huge issue with working my butt off for days on end and not seeing results. i'm an instant gratification kind of person. i know these things take time and perseverance, but i'm struggling...already. and i have a really low pain tolerance; no joke, i'm a weenie. i know this sorenes is my workout's way of saying, "look, laura, i'm working!" anyway, this is me, in a nutshell, this morning.
Funny Confession Ecard: I've injured myself yawning.
and another thing...what's the deal with girls dressing UP to go to the gym? i see it every day. in all honesty, is it for themselves or to impress others? andrew and i went to the gym at 8:30 last night, after rush hour. mostly everyone there was the average not too fit, not too fat: really no one overly impressive. there was a girl who sauntered in after us with her hair down [and fixed] and perfume/body spray that i could smell 2 bikes over. that's just a little much, in my opinion. and the way she sashayed on the elliptical was just the cherry on top. but alas, i guess when i get my hot bod, i'll dress up to go to the gym too. if, for nothing else, than to say "hey, look at my hot bod, and my awesome gym clothes". bitter? maybe a little.

even though it’s not true, this is how i feel today:
Funny Confession Ecard: I can't return to the gym until I lose some weight.

i have to admit, i've been feeling a little homesick lately. not for virginia, or even for my parents, but for arkansas.

i mentioned here that i was born and raised in helena, arkansas right on the mississippi river. i love being from the south. something about the slow pace and spending precious time with far-away family just warms my heart. i had a long conversation with my nana on sunday, who still lives there, which just made me miss it [and her] that much more. Arkansas

andrew and i are throwing around the idea of a fall trip just in time for the 27th annual king biscuit blues festival. i went to the very first one when i was just under a month old! i guess mom really wanted to party. haha, i kid! this year is sure to be unforgettable: headlining this year is the blues beauty herself, bonnie raitt! summer vacation is obviously #1 on my “trips i'm looking forward to” but this comes in a close 2nd. maybe it's just knowing that i'll get to stop by the bar-b-q shop in memphis on the way in!

so tell me,

where’s this tuesday taking you?

i hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing weekend! i definitely did! i wanted to fill y’all in on a little recipe i tried for a jewelry cleaner. it’s really quick and i had all of the ingredients in my pantry already!

at-home-jewelry-cleaner

at home jewelry cleaning solution

1 cup of hot water
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon gentle dishwashing detergent
aluminum foil

simply warm your cup of water in the microwave for 1-2 minutes -- i just got some piping hot water from the keurig. line the bottom of a glass cereal bowl with aluminum foil, add your water, salt, baking soda, and detergent. mix around until the ingredients are combined. now’s the time to let your jewelry soak for 10 minutes and let the magic work. rinse in cold water and i even brushed mine with an old toothbrush for extra shine! voila! like new!

fyi. once the ingredients start reacting it puts off an old-egg sulfur smell, so don’t do this if you’re having company over soon! hah! it’s not too potent, though!

don’t have time to do this? i love the sparkle that toothpaste and a quick scrub gives my rings!

disclaimer: I am NOT responsible if you mix these wrong or if your jewelry, for whatever reason, tarnishes. it worked perfectly for my white gold and diamond engagement ring, pearl earrings, and david yurman silver jewelry. hope it does for you too!

don’t forget to stop back by tomorrow, ‘cause i'm bringing back take me there tuesday!

hey y’all! my apologies for slacking this week. this whole “going to the gym every day to get a hot body” is taking it’s toll on me. i seriously feel like a zombie right now, slow monstrous walk, talk, and all. but still going strong! i'm on day 6 out of 8 (the holiday weekend / redneck festivities knocked me out on sun/mon), and i'm pretty sure that’s the longest streak i've had in my life. sooo in celebration of my new hobby, i've decided to spotlight my workout wishlist for my friday five:

wait, my friends are laughing at me right now, i can feel it. i'm probably the least athletic/most uncoordinated person there ever was. i am not, by any stretch of the imagination, an athlete. my “working out” is the elliptical and, a few times a week, a group power class (bascially, cardio and weights). i'm not a runner, nor do i play any sport. ok, just had to clear the air so i don’t come off as a phony. now…

work-it-wishlist

1  |  2  |  3  |  4  |  5

1  |  so since this is a wish list, i'll start off with some lululemon. full disclosure, i picked the free to be bra because it was cute. i don’t need a lot of support up top, so fashion wins this battle over function. although based on the reviews. it looks like a winner in all departments.

2  |  i really love the nike tempo track running shorts. again, i am not a runner, but when i am “workin’ it” i'm more of a shorts and loose t-shirt kinda gal. usually an old sorority or tech t-shirt, nothing fancy. i digress, these shorts come in a TON of patterns and colors – i’ve even seen them monogrammed on pinterest.

3  |  although i definitely don’t need it now, a comfy sweatshirt that’s still running-errands-appropriate would be nice to add to my list as well. i really like this alo cowl neck one. except for the fact that it’s product picture looks like the model has monkey arms.

4  |  i just got new shoes (liiiike 2 years ago) but due to my lack of physical activity, after a trip around the washing machine they look and function like brand new! BUT since this is a wish list, i'd like these lightweight running shoes from nike, please.

5  |  lastly, it’s the end of my workout and i'm a little parched. i grab my hokie colored camelbak and it gives me that extra push to finish. no? that’s not how it really works? ok. but i do like it a lot! my gal, alex, turned me on to the camelback and it really is a great water bottle - and bpa free which means you won’t ingest that nasty chemical from some plastics!

that sums it up! i'm all ready to get my gym on, now! join me? i need some workout buddies!

i'm linking up with alex and lauren today for their own “friday five” and “high five for friday”.

with summer just around the corner… wait, it’s the end of MAY! as far as i can tell, with a high of 88* today, it’s here! i've got the beach on the brain. andrew and i joined a gym last week, and have been filling our evenings with lots of cardio and sweat. i honestly already feel like it’s making a difference! i'm looking forward to that point where i just jump out of bed in the morning, bursting with energy…that happens, right? i'm really trying to hold myself accountable – even registering with a free online calorie counting / exercise diary program. anyway, if you’ve got some extra motivation hanging around, send it my way! in the meantime, these cute summer pieces are serving as my motivation:

vintage-american-flag-shorts-tutorial
hi y’all! this past week, i fashioned some “vintage” american flag shorts for the upcoming NASCAR race this weekend, and was so proud of myself last night when they turned out exactly like i wanted! i wish i had taken pictures at every step, but i'll try my best to give you an accurate description:

1  |  gather your inspiration, this will help guide you when painting, how short you want to cut your shorts, and what to do on the back pockets (if anything).

vintage american flag shorts inspirationall images above were from pinterest, just search for “american flag shorts”

2  |  find an old pair of jeans, preferably a lighter wash so they’ll really have a vintage feel, and the paint shows up well. we recently made a trip to goodwill, so all of my old jeans had been donated. i ran by buffalo exchange in plaza midwood and snagged a pair of $7 hollister jeans. (which was ALL i spent on this project because i had the paint on hand already!) these were brand new jeans – tags still on ‘em! the jeans had no marks or distressing on them at all, but i'm sure, if your jeans were already worn out, you could just paint and wash and scratch the distressing steps below, if you want!

3  |  don’t get your scissors out yet, just get to painting! i sketched my lines with a pencil and ruler. i also printed a star on some cardstock, cut it out, and used it as a template. just trace the star with a pen and fill it in with white paint! i didn’t use fabric paint. in all honesty, i probably won’t wear these shorts after this weekend, but i'm sure the color would wash out more if you wash it with detergent more than once. i used craft acrylic paint that i use on everything - it’s what i had on hand, and i wasn’t going to spend much money on this in case it was a failure. I would suggest using an angled brush for your stars so it can be a fairly sharp line. i painted all my white first, starting with the stripes. by the time i was through with the stars, the stripes had dried and i could move on to red, then lastly, blue. you’ll want to be sure to paint farther down than you intend to cut – so you’re pattern will go all the way to the bottom of the shorts.

4  |  let the paint dry for about 5 hours, so it has time to really set in, then throw them in the washing machine -- by itself! i did a short cycle, low cold water, no detergent. then let them air dry. remember, they’re still long jeans at this point, i haven’t cut them off into shorts! once they’re dry, NOW you can cut them! i compared the length to my favorite pair of shorts to ensure that they’re an appropriate length. even though these are intended to be redneck/rockabilly, i didn’t want bootie shorts.

5  |  using sharp scissors, get to cutting. i used my kitchen shears because they’re the sharpest i had! i used these links as a guide for distressing: 1 and 2 – 2 has a good tutorial for ombré denim if you’re interested. once you’re through cutting/distressing/destroying, throw the shorts in the wash. again, we’re doing short cycle, low cold water, no detergent. once it’s through, dry them in the dryer.
chances are, you’ll have random threads hanging all off the bottom of the shorts, trim ‘em up a bit, if you like, and you’re DONE! enjoy!

vintage-american-flag-shorts

p.s. if too much of the paint washes out, simply reapply, let it dry and wash again if necessary (this was my rationale when taking a chance and washing them twice!)

where would you wear your american flag shorts?
like it?

for some reason i feel the strong urge to break out in song:

it’s RACE weekend! more importantly, it’s memorial day weekend and we have friends and family coming in to town for the coca-cola 600 nascar race held right here in charlotte. [concord, to be exact] i went to my first nascar race last fall with the men in my life [husband, bro, dad], and in all honesty, had a blast! 1. i love to people watch, and really doesn’t get much better than at a nascar race!  2. i was raised in arkansas and southern virginia, so it’s fun to be able to channel [and embrace] my inner redneck. since i've been slacking this week on the posts, not only do you get a fun song, you get an outfit as well! here’s my attire for sunday at the track:
redneck-racin-weekend
1  |  i thought i'd keep it simple in a white v-neck since i'm going all out on the shorts. my favorite is this one from old navy. it’s got a soft slub knit that’s comfortable for all day wear, but not too sheer!

2  |  i spent the better half of last weekend diy’ing my shorts! after scooping some $7 jeans from a local consignment/thrift store, i put a paintbrush in my hand and got patriotic. i used this tutorial and some [pin]spiration to help me through it! mine actually turned out pretty well! click here to preview a snippet. might post a better image later!

3  |  i might be the only southern sorority girl who, before a month ago, didn’t own a pair of cowboy boots. but since i don’t wear them too frequently i decided to score some on ebay, which i did – for $30. if you look, you will find them too. i seriously love ebay.

4  |  i won’t be sporting these ray-bans, but i will be wearing my cheap aviators i bought at the beach one year. probably cost me about $11 from alvin’s island, if i had to guess. regardless, there’s no way i would take my nice glasses out there - not with my track record [pun intended. hah!].

5  |  lastly, no redneck woman is complete without her cheap light beer. preferably consumed with some barbecue and baked beans, thank you.

hope everyone has a safe, and happy memorial day! “SHAKE AND BAKE”…sorry.

what are your plans for the holiday weekend?

happy friday, everyone! here’s a few things i'm excited about today:

1  |  i painted my nails last night using a picture from kate as inspiriation. a fun twist on the french mani! coincidentally, she posted a tutorial for it today! see how you can get your gold dipped nails!

2  |  my brother’s girlfriend, rachael, is coming to play this weekend! she’s got great taste in fashion, and i'm sure there will be some shopping in order!

3  |  these pretty bracelets and this tutorial to make them!…and that blog title.

i hope everyone had a great weekend and got to spend some good qt with their moms! my parents were out of town this weekend, which means we spent the whole weekend with andrew’s fam – which is always awesome. i always think of how fortunate i've been to marry into a family that i love so so so much and that i think of as my own. it really doesn’t come around too often.

we had a little bit of drama with the house hunt this weekend. we put in an offer on friday and have had some mixed signals and lots of back and forth since. so, naturally, i'm a nervous wreck. my mind needs to go somewhere else right now…

Take Me There Tuesday Blog Button

next wednesday, dave matthews band is coming to charlotte…and we have tickets! i'm really excited! this was a spontaneous purchase after a few drinks with my brother a couple of weeks ago, but one that i'm sure we won’t regret. i saw dave live in 2007 when he played a free concert for virginia tech in lane stadium. i wasn’t even a fan, then, and thought they were awesome. how someone can keep their energy up for that long, i'll never know.

pic via

i'm sure, as most artists do, he’ll have a new cd or new songs they’re promoting, but i sure hope they play some old favorites: ants marching (duh) and grey street (duh duh). really, i'm looking forward to having a blanket on the grass, a beer in my hand, and listening to great music [on a weeknight]!!

you can bet that dmb will be the boss of spotify until then!

so, if you need to go somewhere today…

hi y’all! it must be nice to be “friday” – everyone’s so happy when you come around and they look forward to seeing you all week! the week has flown by – i guess being busy will do that to you! i've been wanting to fill y’all in on some great beauty buys that i love. without further ado, here’s my friday five.
friday-five-beauty-bargains

1  |  it’s no secret, i was cursed with bad, oily, acne prone skin. i have a hard time finding a moisturizer that doesn’t make my forehead look like a shiny….something and irritate my skin. behold the alba even advance daily cream. i accidentally grabbed a pic of the night cream. fyi, it looks really similar. this stuff smells really good and is silky smooth.

2  |  false eyelashes have always been a favorite of my girlfriends and myself. my favorites are the ardell 110 black. anytime a special occasion arrives, or maybe even a fun night out, it’s time for some falsies. i've only recently gotten decent at putting them on without poking my eye out – quite the accomplishment, eh?

3  |  the opi rapidry topcoat. i've sung its praises before – y’all this stuff is amazing. $11 might be a little steep, but use an ulta coupon and go get it today. not only will it leave you without sheet marks (i always get the urge to paint my nails before bed), it will make your mani last daayyys longer than anything before.

4  |  my nightly skincare routine is not complete without the almay moisturizing eye makeup remover pads. simply washing my face will not do – i'll always have specs of mascara in my eyeball, or raccooned around my eyes. these little pads get all the gunk right off. it does leave a little bit of oily "moisturizing” residue that i usually just wipe off with tp. cheap and good!

5  |  a few months ago i won a giveaway from glamour magazine and scored 6 zoya nail polishes and to my surprise, it came with zoya’s awesome polish remover, remove+. before i used this, i really didn’t think there was a difference in polish removers. it’s a 3 in 1 solution that removes, conditions, and even cleans the nail before applying your next polish selection. and it actually smells good! it even comes in the handy pump that you see in the salon, which really makes me feel like a pro!

i'm linking up with alex and lauren today for their own “friday five” and “high five for friday”.

p.s. everyone go over to alex’s blog and give her a hard time – she left for the bahamas today, and i'm so jealous – as i'm sure you are now, too!

hi y’all. it’s wednesday and i'm linking up with jamie for what i'm loving wednesday! short post today: per usual, my stomach is rumbling, so i've gotta run and get some lunch.

what-im-loving-wednesday

1 | i'm loving carrie underwood’s new cd, blown away. i'll admit, it took me a little while to love it, though. i kept listening to “good girl” over and over and swearing it was the best song on the album, which it very well may be, but i've grown to love “do you think about me” and “blown away” so much as well. it’s worth noting that i did buy the cd from best buy last weekend, and it’s the first cd i've bought from a store (not itunes) since her last release in 2009.

2 | last night we had a big thunderstorm, and it was so nice to just cut off the sound machine and listen to it all night. i slept like a baby. am i the only one who looks forward to a good rain? …i sound like a farmer…

3 | how cute is this state print? i would love to get one for every state we’ve lived in (arkansas, virginia, north carolina), and hang them all in the kitchen.

4 | lastly, i'm loving my new blue jeans. i scored big time at the banana republic outlet this weekend and walked away with some cobalt skinnies for $15. unreal. i cant wait to wear them with some bold stripes! p.s. this is not me (pic via)

what are you loving this wednesday?

i need a break, how about you?

the weather has been pretty pleasant here lately, not too hot, not too cool. better enjoy it while i can - we all know how HOT these charlotte summers can get. i've been trying my best to be conscious about what i eat - trying to get my bathing suit bod ready for summer. LBH, i haven't had a "bathing suit bod" since college. lots of grilled chicken breast and trying to up my veggie intake are my goals for the next few weeks. if i can get into a routine and stop craving the bad stuff, i think i'll be in the clear to lose a few lbs.

so, i got a late start today, as you can see i'm posting this at noon. my stomach is growling, and i've got food on the brain. needless to say, my mind is taking me to a restaurant.

Take Me There Tuesday Blog Button

today, i'll be grabbing a quick lunch at the common market - over in southend. i'm cheating at my TMTT rules by posting about a place i've been, but hey, it is where i wanna go today! you can view their menu online and see that the bulk of their selections are delicious deli sams, but if you're watching your waistline [decrease], they've got some great vegetarian options  - as well as some big awesome salads that sound amazing!

The Common Market

ok, so i don't have any pictures of my food [yet], but use your imagination, and you'll enjoy this trip as much as me!

please tell me…

where is this tuesday taking you?
